It may only be October, but let's be real with each other: we're already thinking about winter gifts, outfits, stocking stuffers, the whole holiday lot. While parents and grandparents are preparing for the holidays, you're obviously super excited, but still... there's a sense of dread you can't shake, because holidays have historically resulted in an inevitable avalanche of cheap, loud plastic toys that absolutely take over your living room.

Our solution? The 4-gift rule! This has been going viral on social media, but if you're not in the loop, here's what you need to know: Instead of focusing on quantity of gifts, focus instead on the quality of the personal gifts you give your little ones. You only need to pick up four things: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read! Read ahead for our guide on putting together the perfectly curated luxury holiday gift!

Something they WANT:

This one needs to be your "big" gift that's meant solely for sparking joy. This should be the thing at the very top of their wish list! If your kid's number one want is something cheap, plastic, flashy, or loud, I'd encourage you to pivot towards a more high-quality option. We suggest focusing on a toy that inspired open-ended, imaginative play.

Our boutique's favorite playthings come from Maileg, a luxury toy brand that creates the most adorable, beautifully-constructed, magical mice dolls, furniture, and accessories. With Maileg, your little one can build their own little world with original characters, locations, and stories.

For kiddos that like things that go "ZOOOOOM!" there's no better option than a fleet of indestructible wooden toy cars from Candylab! These vintage-inspired car toys are ethically sourced and contain zero toxic materials, from the paint, to the packaging, to the wheels.

If your little one is a fan of things that are more soft and snuggly, we highly recommend a plushie from Cuddle & Kind Co. These knit dolls have top notch construction, they're made of organic, kid-safe materials, and for every doll sold, Cuddle & Kind donates ten meals to a family in need! This means that, on top of your kiddo loving the gift, this is a purchase you can feel good about!

If your kid has any specific interests or hobbies, this gift should be the easiest one to shop for. Musical kids can get a new instrument, a book of sheet music, or maybe you can sign them up for lessons. Artistic kids can get a pad of watercolor paper and new paint, or a sketchbook with artist-quality pencils. If you have a little techie at home, there's probably a gadget or gizmo for their computer or gaming console that they'd love to see at the top of their holiday gift pile!

Something they NEED:

This one is a bit more tough to shop for! Our top recommendation for the "need" gift is practical clothing for the chilly weather. Children are constantly growing and changing, so it's unlikely that last year's winter wardrobe is still a perfect fit. The new season brings along a whole new set of winter necessities, and by following the 4-gift rule, you can turn necessity into a luxury gift!

For babies, a new set of jammies for the cooler weather is an excellent idea. Kyte Baby pajamas are our number one choice of baby sleepwear at the boutique. The bamboo fabric is super soft on sensitive baby skin, naturally temperature-regulating (no more waking up to a crying, chilly baby), and come in beautiful colors, prints, and patterns that parents love. New blankets and loveys are also wonderful "need" gifts for babies!

For bigger kids, consider getting them a quilted winter coat, a comfy cardigan to wear to school, or a pullover to keep them warm when they're playing with friends this winter. You can also provide them with new bedding, decor for their room, or sports gear, if you're raising a little athlete.

Teenagers can be deceptively difficult to shop for with their constantly-changing likes and dislikes, so buying them a whole winter ensemble may not go over well. Instead, get them layering pieces (some basics, some not) to try on. That way they don't feel like you're making them dress a certain way, and they still have freedom to experiment with their own personal style. Cellphone cases featuring their favorite colors or characters work wonderfully here, too, or aesthetically-pleasing planners, binders, or locker decorations so they're more stylish at school!

This might not be the most exciting gift for your little one, so shopping for high-quality goods that they'll actually enjoy is imperative!

Something to WEAR:

Wintertime brings with it the holiday season, which is packed with family photoshoots, dinners, special gatherings, church services... you get it. With all of these get-togethers, your little one is going to need a new fancy, show-stopping outfit, which you can use as one of their gifts!

For formalwear, Noralee is our number one recommendation! Their fabulous styles for children have designs that look beautiful and are 100% parent-approved, while still being comfortable enough for kids to wear without feeling itchy or restricted. The brand's vintage-inspired aesthetic makes their outfits timeless, elegant, and perfect for a wide variety of occasions. The best part? They have matching styles for mom! If you're a fan of mommy/mini matching looks, you can't go wrong with Noralee.

If you don't have any super fancy-shmancy formal events planned for winter, get them a high-quality winter piece from Noralee's sister brand, Rylee + Cru. Rylee + Cru has the same inspired style as Noralee, but with more relaxed silhouettes, playful patterns, and a more modern aesthetic. These pieces are still high-quality, with beautiful construction, but work perfectly as an "everyday" style. They have Mommy/Mini matching looks, too, so coordinating an outfit with your little one is easier than ever.

Something to READ:

Books are the ultimate quiet-time activity to help your little one wind down after all of the hectic holiday happenings and travel. If you shop our collection of children's books, finding the perfect gift will be a breeze.

If you have a baby, put a Paige Tate & Co. Little Library book by Tabitha Paige in their gift pile! These first-word books are written by an actual speech pathologist, feature gorgeous illustrations, and can help you bond with your baby while also providing them a solid foundation for their speech skills.

For kids and teens, shopping for books shouldn't be too hard, especially if they have any special interests or hobbies. Growing up, I loved art, and remember being thrilled on Christmas morning whenever I was gifted a "How to Draw" book. My brother was a super musical kid, and was thrilled to get a book of sheet music from one of his favorite composers. My sister, the star athlete at school, got a book on the history of volleyball, one of her favorite activities, and kept it for years!

Reading will improve your kids' language skills, their critical thinking skills, build stronger brain skills, and helps them perform better in school now, on top of multiple other benefits! This is a gift that keeps them quiet and occupied, without draining their brain like a phone, tablet, or TV will.

How to Implement the 4-Gift Rule:

This blog post isn't here to tell you that your kid should only get four gifts in total this holiday season--you should definitely spoil your little ones right now! Use it as a guideline for family members and friends that are giving your kid gifts, so you don't have to deal with mountains of cheap toys that will just end up in the garbage.

Another great application of this rule is to make the 4 gifts specifically from you. For example, when I was a little kid, Christmas was our winter holiday of choice. Stocking stuffers, candy, and smaller toys/gadgets were all from Santa Claus, but the big gift (like a bike, gaming console, or the year that we got a big trampoline in the backyard) was from mom and dad. I don't know exactly why they did that, maybe it was so we didn't go back to school and brag that Santa got us something big and fancy, when other kids weren't as lucky as us. But regardless of their reasoning, it worked really well for our family, and it may work perfectly for your family, too!

One Final Note, Before you Go...

Using this 4-gift rule is also a form of self-care for parents! Here's why:

Visual clutter = mental clutter. A post-holiday living room full of loud, bright toys immediately spikes your stress levels and make your anxiety go crazy, too! By setting this boundary (whether it's with yourself, or with the family members buying gifts for your little one), you're saving your future self's sanity!

Time is a luxury. Cheap toys have a billion little pieces that can get lost or accidentally tossed out, they break easy, they need replacement batteries, etc. Honestly, who has the time for all that? Not you! By saying "no" to these low-quality knick-knacks, you're actively protecting your calm, cozy environment at home.

It also prevents meltdowns! Those loud, flashy toys are extremely annoying to parents, and to little kids, they can be too much to handle, especially for your youngest kids and toddlers. Once your kid gets overstimulated from a toy like this, it's nearly impossible to get them to get rid of their crankiness! And, again, these toys break very easily. Nobody wants to see their kid crying when their new toy breaks after a couple of uses, so let's avoid that. High-quality toys that inspire imaginative, open-ended play will not only last longer, but they'll generate more fun for kids, and less stress for you!

Happy Holidays!
