We've all been there. You're on vacation, excited to beach it up, only to wake up, look out the window, just to see cloudy skies and a grim forecast on your weather app. You've spent months planning your trip, getting all of your ducks in a row, packing, hyping up the kids, all that just to face... utter disappointment.

It feels like the whole day is wasted, and you do NOT want to feel like you're trapped in the beach house. Just breathe! Rain does not equal a ruined vacation! It just means you and your family need to pivot into cozy mode. Here's our guide!

The "Emergency Stash" Hack

Here's one of our most brilliant mom hacks: the emergency cozy stash. When you're packing for your vacation, you should always bring one or two brand new toys. Don't make a big deal about the new toys. In fact, the kids shouldn't see them at all because, remember, this is your rainy day stash.

Just on account of its newness, the rainy day toy is guaranteed to provide your kiddo with at least a couple of hours of quiet, focused play, which means you don't have to stress about entertaining a toddler all day long. Need some inspo? Here are some of our favs!

Maileg mice are perfectly sized for small hands, so hiding them away in your mom tote or carry on luggage will be a breeze. They're high-quality and super durable, so they won't tear or fall apart, and they don't have any flashing lights or loud noises! Maileg mice come in cute little matchboxes, which are perfect for surprising your child. Place the matchbox on a counter or table for your kid to "discover," and they'll have an amazing time with their new little friend. You can check out our Maileg collection here.

Cuddle & Kind Co. dolls are another favorite of ours here at the boutique. The mini dolls are perfect for your toddler to snuggle with, while the larger sized dolls are the perfect height to set them up for a rainy day tea party indoors. They're super soft, and their whimsical designs give the dolls a ton of character, leading to hours of playtime.  You can check out our Cuddle & Kind Co. collection here.

The Blanket Fort Day

Rainy days means that routine flies out the window, so all of the beach towels you packed have to be repurposed. Making blanket forts are a classic fun childhood activity, and a rainy beach day is the perfect occasion to give it a try! If your beach towels aren't enough, find some lightweight blankets in the rental to finish the fort.

Building the fort will take up a solid chunk of time, but you have to last the entire day! Make the blanket fort day extra special and make it a pajama party! Kyte Baby sleepwear is super soft, so your kid can play in their PJs all day long without any itchy fabric or threads getting caught. Look at our Kyte Baby sleep lineup here.

If you had any dinner reservations, they might need to get canceled depending on how bad the weather is. If that's the case, turn the pajama party into a pizza pajama party! Order a pie, hang out in the blanket fort, and watch a movie or two together. A sweet indoor picnic with the family is a great way to avoid rainy day blues at the rental.

The Local Plan B

This is super important! Sit down, open up Google, and familiarize yourself with the area around your travel destination. If the toys get boring, or the kids aren't having fun in the blanket fort anymore, they'll start bouncing off the walls. Being cooped up at the rental in the rain is awful, being cooped up with a bunch of bored, hyper kids, is even worse!

If your travel destination is Wrightsville Beach specifically, you're in luck, because we've curated a great list of kid-friendly activities to do when it's drizzling outside:

The Children's Museum of Wilmington offers a 15,000 square foot space across four floors and three historic buildings full of creative, fun, and educational exhibits. This is the type of museum that makes learning a blast, and there are frequent in-house events to make your trip extra special!

Flip N Fly of Wilmington is another excellent option for your rainy day outing, especially if your children are feeling extra energetic. While the park does include trick walls and ninja courses for teens and adults, adult supervision is an absolute necessity when you're bringing kids with you. Burn some calories, get rid of their extra energy, and then grab a snack on your way out at their in-house cafe!

Jungle Rapids is a local hotspot that every kid should experience at least once. They have a huge arcade with tons of games and a great laser tag course, so the time will fly by as you and your family have hours of fun. Even if you're not experiencing nasty weather, stopping by Jungle Rapids still might be a good idea, because they have loads of outdoor activities too, including mini-golf and an entire water park!

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is, as a lifelong Wilmingtonian, a personal favorite of mine. The vibes are super calm and relaxed. Just a heads up though, this will be a drive. It's about 45 minutes away from Wrightsville Beach, but the experience is well worth the travel time. This aquarium is huge. I have tons of memories of visiting the aquarium as a kid with my family, and on school field trips, and having a blast every time. From peering eye-to-eye with an albino alligator to watching sharks glide through their tanks to tons of interactive exhibits, the aquarium at Fort Fisher is an absolute must-visit.

IMPORTANT: At time of press (May 1 2026) the aquarium at Fort Fisher is still open, but will be undergoing a huge renovation starting at the end of this month. Renovations are projected to keep the aquarium closed until late 2028 or early 2029. Make sure you experience the aquarium before it (only temporarily!) closes down!

The Silver Lining

I know, I know. When you see rain on the forecast during your beach vacay, it's easy to start spiraling. Stop. As long as you just follow this guide you'll have all of your bases covered when rainy weather threatens your beach day!

Junior isn't going to remember every single wave he jumps over. Little Suzie isn't going to remember every single seashell picks up on this beach trip. But you know what they will remember? The day at the beach house where they got to play and laugh in their PJs while eating pizza. They'll remember going to the aquarium and seeing all of the local marine life that lives on the beach.

If you want to make sure the rain can't ruin your beach day, why not stop by Wrightsville Ave Boutique? Check out our collection for women, and our collection for kids, and you'll build the perfect rainy day emergency stash. See you soon!Â
